Drawing on the long tradition of “improving tales” presented to young audiences, The Circlet revisits the moralizing structures of nineteenth-century lantern narrative. The story unfolds during a picnic gathering and concerns a solitary child whose loneliness becomes the catalyst for an unsettling intimacy with the natural world.

The Windfall takes inspiration from lantern entertainments that promoted solicitude. A new shadowed fable emerges from a found but fragmentary sequence of hand-painted lantern slides. Set within a landscape shaped by violent weather and drenched in gothic atmosphere, the work follows an act of compassion and relates a meeting with a mysterious creature — at once vulnerable and other.
